SERUMS AS PART OF DAILY SKINCARE

Serums are gaining increasing popularity. Lightweight and easily absorbed by the skin, they deliver an intense dose of active ingredients.

Their concentration and potency mean you only need a few drops for the entire face. They provide a great option to address specific skin concerns like dark spots, fine lines, and signs of aging.

“A skin serum is not a moisturizer,” says Dr. Abigail Waldman, instructor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School )https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/skin-serum-what-it-can-and-cant-do-2018061214029). “Rather, they are highly concentrated formulations that are designed to sink into the skin quickly, delivering an intensive dose of ingredients that can address common skin complaints.”

Serums are concentrated so that they deliver a high potency of active ingredients to the skin. The right time to apply a serum is immediately after cleansing but before moisturizing.

"Serums are lightweight and highly concentrated formulas infused with ingredients designed to tackle specific concerns,” says Dr Waldmann. “They are intended to penetrate deeply into the skin, whereas moisturizers help to fortify the surface of the skin to improve skin’s TEWL."

"Not all serums work the same,” says Dr. Maryam M. Asgari, associate professor in the department of dermatology at Harvard Medical School. ”How well they work depends on the active ingredients, the formulation, the vehicle, and the stability of the compound. Serums are typically lightweight formulations made of smaller molecules than moisturizers. They are usually thin and absorbent, leaving little, if anything, remaining on the surface of the skin."

MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SERUMS AND MOISTURIZERS

Serums are designed to target specific skin concerns. They are small molecules formulated to penetrate deeply into the skin to combat free radicals and repair the skin at a cellular level.

Serums penetrate deeper and faster into the skin than moisturizers because they are made of smaller molecules. They leave your skin smooth, supple, more luminous, and radiant with no greasy sensation.

MOISTURIZERS WORK IN TANDOM WITH SERUMS

Moisturizers increase water content in the skin, making it soft and supple. The main function of a moisturizer is to trap moisture in the epidermis improving skin’s barrier function. Moisturizers can be classified as emollients (lipids and oils), humectants (glycerin, urea, and hyaluronic acid), occlusives (lanolin, bee wax, stearic acid, and petroleum jelly), and protein rejuvenators (collagen, keratin, and elastin). These skin hydrating emollients and sealing ingredients (that serums do not include) help to prevent Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). They form a physical barrier on the skin that prevents moisture evaporation and helps skin stay hydrated. As they improve the skin’s barrier function, they protect the skin from ongoing environmental oxidative stressors. Moisturizers have larger molecules than serums, so they don’t reach the deeper layers of the skin.

HOW TO APPLY THEM

Serums are applied on clean dry skin.

Then apply your moisturizer to protect and seal the skin. Whether your skin is oily and acne-prone or dry and flaky, a moisturizer is simply a must. Don’t skip this step. It’ll keep your skin hydrated and plump, it’ll help fend off wrinkles, and most importantly, it’ll keep your moisture barrier healthy and intact, as well as lock in the benefits of your serum. And interestingly, use of a serum will also boost the hydrating effects of your moisturizer.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SERUM

There are several serums on the market today. Some of them are very specific, specially designed for different skin types and to meet specific needs, such as:

  • Prevent oxidative stress.

  • Enhance skin hydration.

  • Slow down or reverse skin aging.

  • Improve skin elasticity and firmness.

  • Even the skin tone.

  • Fade dark patches or hyperpigmentation.

  • Control oily skin.

  • Solve a lack of vitamins or nutrients.

Consult your skincare professional to help you choose the best serum(s) for you.
